RESUMES: A Twist on This Write of Passage
(Misspelling intentional.)
We’ve made resume writing as easy as possible in the newest version of Podium X; just a few clicks allow student-athletes to create Podiums that showcase their personal brand and develop professional resumes. Students love it.
But we’ve also heard from some of our peers that resume writing is a rite of passage that’s an essential step for starting out on your career. “Everyone should know how to write a resume,” we often hear.
We disagree. Instead, we believe: Everyone should know how to make a resume happen! But the writing of it? The tedious, time-consuming, frustrating, hair pulling, creating of a resume? We are over that. And we have a better solution.
We get it; a resume is an essential marketing tool. It’s where a candidate presents their work history, their education, and their specific skills. But writing the resume is not a skill employers care about – it’s not even a good use of a busy student’s time. Choosing the “right” font, format, and wording takes up mental bandwidth that could be used on other important tasks such as preparing to talk about how lessons you learned during your athletic career will impact your professional business career.
For recruiters and career transition professionals to stay relevant to young students and athletes, we need to update our tools and techniques to match the technology students use every day. Podium X offers features that engage the student (or former student) and makes it easy to set up a podium and create a resume.
We made Podium X simple and intuitive because we know athletes don’t have the time or energy to struggle for hours over their resume or ponder their personal brand when we can help them get it right in minutes. We also don’t think university administrators should spend hours assisting in the tedious process of pulling together a resume – often from scratch – especially when Podium X has built-in tools to help student-athletes see their value and understand their transferrable skills.
We think they should all spend their energy on the end, not the means. And here’s what the athletes from some of the 327 universities who have adopted Podium X are telling us.
